Shadowrun Draft: North Virginia

This serves as a draft of a section of the setting information for my Shadowrun campaign.  Information is largely collected from the Sixth World Wiki.
On November 10, 2034, Virginia pulled itself from the Union, creating the Confederation of American States and dividing the United Canadian and American States.  As part of that treaty, the District was re-joined with Arlington and Alexandria counties, which left D.C. proper in 1846, and Virginia was bisected.  From as far west as West Virginia and as far south as the Rappahannock, Virginia largely split in two.  The move was welcomed from residents that were joining the new Federal District of Columbia, but the residents of North Virginia (NVA), or Occupied North Virginia, were largely unpleased.

North Virginia's capital stands in Fredericksburg as the UCAS' buffer zone standing between the C.A.S. armed forces and the capitol.  To the west, the Dulles Corridor solidified into Eisenhower City, a section of sprawl moving into the FDC itself once it met the Dulles Airport.  To the south, Fredericksburg built itself up with as much might as it could muster, but paled in comparison to Richmond to the south, and the FDC, to the north.  To the east, Heathsville built up into a large naval base to protect the mouth of the Potomac from Richmond's unprecedented naval resources at Hampton and Norfolk.  The Chincoteague wildlife preserve became a haven of barricade running and was occupied by a large UCAS artillery post.
The military buildup along the border led to a feeling of occupation among the residents.  National Guard, Border Patrol, and TSA checkpoints dotted the landscape, and with I-95, I-81, and Rt. 1, and Rt. 29 quickly becoming smuggling routes, the Guard slowed traffic between the UCAS and CAS to a crawl.  North Virginia citizens were resentful of the UCAS relegating their home to a defense barrier.  Secession is a prominent talking point in NVA politics, and insist that North Virginia is not a UCAS state, but rather an "Occupied Territory."

Transit
For most of the day, major roads are largely clogged with commuters.  Congestion is expected, and even though parts of Northern Virginia are close to FDC, the trip can easily exceed three to four hours.  Locals primarily stay away from main roads, using suburban streets as shortcuts.  The VRE extends rail from the FDC Union Station to Manassas, in the west, and through Fredericksburg to the South to Richmond.  Naval travel extends south into CAS waters, leaving transit through the mouth of the Potomac shaky at best.  Eisenhower City is the only North Virginia location with mass-transit access to FDC via the Metro Silver Line.  By car, travel north from Fredericksburg is difficult, as passage over the Occoquan River is limited to either Rte. 1 or a chokepoint along I-95.  From the southwest, 66 and 29 are unusable as they approach FDC.  From the west, Leesburg has a much easier time accessing FDC due to the lesser security on Rte. 7 and the Dulles Connector.  Similarly, travel North or South between Manassas and Leesburg is unimpeded.  A good rule of thumb -- if you're going either toward or away from FDC, you will be in heavy traffic any time between 6am and 10pm.  About the only perk of living in this area, SINners who were residents of Virignia at the time of the split have dual citizenship in the UCAS and the CAS, making it easier to pass through checkpoints on both sides of the border.  They're also allowed to use a QuickLane system that allows them to get through the particularly nasty section of 95 faster.
Law Enforcement
Though individual security companies are the norm among corporate security and in communities, North Virginia's status as a barrier to an invasion of the FDC leaves much of law enforcement in the hands of the National Guard, TSA, and Border Patrol.  Drones patrol the sky above the entire border.  The fight against smuggling and the vigilance necessary of a border during a cold war leave NVA at a state of high alert.
Organized Crime
The crime families of FDC largely leave NVA to its own devices, as Marconi and Mueller thugs battle for territory, and have little to gain in NVA.  Most crime in the area consists of smuggling rings and corporate raids.
Corporate
Within Eisenhower City, Saeder Krupp, AresSpace, and Shiawise Armaments all maintain a significant presence, but any aerospace or defense corp wanting to gain or keep influence within the UCAS is here.  UCAS Online is headquartered here.  Aztechnology, meanwhile, has left its footprint on the I-95 corridor, and a large pyramid stands at the mouth of the Occoquan River in Woodbridge.
Civilian Life
Outside of Eisenhower City, the bulk of North Virginia is taken up by strip malls and small gated neighborhoods and cul-de-sacs, with their own private security forces.  Among these neighborhoods are countless corp-sponsored neighborhoods, providing havens of security for corporate wage-slave telecommuters who still hope to have the American dream of owning their own home with white picket fences.
Jobs
* Smuggling - Smuggling runs are common.  Due to the border checkpoint, getting things across the border can draw a high fee.  You name it, someone wants it across the border -- BTLs, people, guns.  When there's a buyer, there's a way.
* Corporate Espionage - Ares always had a stranglehold on Eisenhower, but the other corps are trying to chip away at that.  A runner that gets involved is going to make quite a good deal, or be dead.
 * Political Sabotage - Politics isn't too far from the eye of the NVA.  The UCAS, the CAS, and the corps all are vying for power, and the NVA is caught in the middle.
