On the cusp of my completion of planning for the first arc of my D&D campaign of a somewhat non-traditional campaign structure, the lovely lady I spend a hint of my free time with declared that she'd be interested in trying something in a bit of a different setting. This got me started working on Project Mercury, a more traditional tabletop roleplaying game with an adventuring bent, in a setting that she is interested in -- Victorian Britain.
Project Mercury follows multiple concurrent parties in varying parts of the British Empire. It will use Cthulhu as a system (or, perhaps, as a cornerstone), with the Cthulhu by Gaslight modifications, but won't be directly tied with Lovecraftian Mythos. Each party will have a "contacts pool," from which players can select and develop the character they would choose to play. When a character is not actively being played, the character re-enters the pool, and becomes a contact for the party, providing information or one-off uses of skills that the party may not have.
Thematically, players will explore a setting primarily presented in Steampunk games, without the particulars of technology. Instead, it will focus on the spirit of adventure and exploration, while exploring a world similar to that of Alan Moore's From Hell with a hint of the fascination with the occult of the era and the spirit of adventure and conquest that accompanies the expansion of the Empire.
