Mods to Fix Skyrim's Lackluster Presentation

As we all know by now, Bethesda makes games that can be bordering unplayable on release. After slogging through Fallout 3, Morrowind, and Oblivion, I've come to expect the fact that I have to rely on modders to make the games even remotely tolerable and to fix bugs.  I've also come to expect expansions to need serious tweaking, which is why I've not bothered with Dawnguard, and why I'm not certain all of these mods will work with Dawnguard.

Followers Are Idiots
Really.  They are.  They walk over traps, accidentally stand in your AoEs, and generally get themselves killed or lost as frequently as possible.  They also like wearing the wrong gear.  And let's not even start about horse issues.  Check out Lydia's best attempt at walking through a door here:

To fix this:
On Steam, install the following mods:
Follower Trap Safety - Followers avoid traps.
Followers Keep Up - Followers try to stick with you.
Empathy Spell - Identify the strengths of a follower to equip them appropriately.
Undying Companions - They can't kill themselves permanently.
Better Follower Improvements - Followers Could (theoretically) ride horses, as well as some AI tweaks.

Terrible Maps
They are really extremely terrible.  There aren't markers for every major location, maps don't appropriately mark roads or known landmarks, and quest markers don't always show where the quest is.
To fix this:
Better Quest Objectives - Objectives will actually point where you should go.
More Map Markers - Player homes and frequently traveled landmarks now are usable locations.
A Quality World Map - A map that doesn't suck.  Now with 100% more roads.

NPCs are idiots.
They scream at you across zones about mudcrabs and arrows, they offer only a pittance for perfect armor, and they don't seem to understand that there's some sort of war going on.

To fix this:
Reduced Distance NPC Greetings - Now fewer people will have taken arrows to the knee.
Leveling Merchant's [sp] wallets - Merchants now actually have money to buy things you want to sell.
Warzones: Civil Unrest - Adds the civil war to the game.  Perhaps the single most enjoyable Skyrim mod I've found.

The Dragonborn is an Idiot
You can't seem to find your way around a paper bag, keep missing ore, ignore important books, can't seem to find anything in your inventory that you're looking for, and keep trying to learn spells you already know.
To fix this:
Glowing Ore Veins - Now you can find ore veins!
Unread Books Glow - And Unread Books, Too!
Unique Region Names - Identify where in Skyrim you are when zoning.
Improved Container Names - Identify what's in a barrel without looting.
One Click Looting - Loot everything in an object, rather than sifting through.
SkyUI - For a usable UI that lets you search and organize.
Known Spells - Change spell scrolls in inventory to show you know them

What mods have you noticed are essential to your game?

  1. Followers being stupid is a staple of gaming. Why would you take away this touchstone? What next? No turtles for Mario to jump on?
