An Intro to World of Warcraft Addons (part 1)

A Primer on Addons
Addons are plugins that allow user additions to the World of Warcraft interface, dynamically changing the user experience in ways that is arguably essential.  This is a quick guide I’ve written on how to install addons, how to update them, and it accompanies a few recommendations I’d start with.

The First Step
There are a handful of ways to install and manage Addons.  The easiest by far is the Curse client.  Curse is a program that runs in the background that will notify you when your addons have updates available, automatically install addons you choose, and otherwise make the process of using addons seamless.  It’s compatible with quite a large number of games, including WoW, Minecraft, and Skyrim – and nearly every MMO.  To download Curse, go to Curse.com and click “Client” on the top bar.  Click “Download for PC.”  Once it completes downloading, follow the prompts and create an account.  It will automatically locate every compatible game installation on your hard drive.  Once it’s installed, you’re ready to go.
Choosing Add-ons
There are two ways to choose and install add-ons through Curse.  The first is through the client itself.  By  clicking on the top tab labeled “Get More Addons,” you can see a list of supported Addons and sort by popularity, date, likes, and category.  You can also search for specific addons.  This is great if you’re searching for a specific addon by name, or you’re just trying to install what’s popular (Recount, DBM, Auctioneer, etc).  However, the more informative way to search for addons is through the Curse website.  Start at the WoW addons page, and you can browse by category – and most of all, you can see pictures of what each addon will do to your User Interface (UI) before you install.  Once you click to the addon’s page, you’ll have a box on the right side of the page below “Download Now” labeled “Install via Curse Client.”  Use this, and it’ll sync up with Curse and start downloading and installing the addon automatically.  This will pop up a dialog window asking you if you want to open it via the Curse client.  The answer, in case you were unsure, is yes.
Next, I’ll walk you through specific addons I recommend for every single install, and then optional addons.
