Valve Eyes a Walled Garden

Today, Valve announced a service that would essentially let us have a say in what games actually make it to be sold on Steam.  In the long voting tradition where America allows the throngs to elect its idols, Steam's Greenlight allows us to be the final arbiter in their walled garden.

Social Gaming

Given how many games expect us to be online at all times (from MMOs to Ubisoft titles) and the huge focus on multiplayer, I'm surprised that there's so little interest in social gaming.  There have been a number of small developments, mostly pushed by Valve, but we're well behind the curve compared to the average web user.

Follow-Up: Cheapening IP

Hot on the heels of last week's post about Steam sales cheapening IP, I should remind you -- the Steam summer sale is right around the corner.  Last year, it was around the last week of June/first week of July.  Prepare your wallets, because they're about to take all of the money by cheapening all of the IP.

And by that, I mean running a loss-leading sale to get you to buy games you were either on the fence about or weren't quite ready to buy at release.

Also, you've got a few hours left to buy Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis for three bucks.

The Games Steam Says I've Played the Most (Total)

One of Valve's more interesting quirks isn't that it keeps tabs on how you play game -- it's that you can see much of this information, and it reveals rather unique things that you wouldn't expect to see otherwise.  Much like looking at heat maps of deaths while playing shooters, it shows what pits I've fallen into.  Today, I'm looking at one statistic in particular -- the top ten games Valve says I enjoyed based solely on time played.
