Guild Ball Kickstarter

Guildball, an alternate fantasy football game in the vein of Blood Bowl (but with slightly less fantasy), has a kickstarter going on now.  It ends March 22nd, and the buy in is at 57 pounds ($95).

Mobile Frame Zero: The C6 System

MFZ requires a set of mechs to your design. There's a stock mech list you can build for around $10 a Mech. However, there are also a series of mech designs publicly available called the C6 system, created by Micah Bauer, that are all made out of common parts and thus available for less than half of that. Check it out here.

Mobile Frame Zero - Bell of Lost Souls Review

Bell of Lost Souls has finally gotten around to reviewing Mobile Frame Zero, a LEGO mech wargame I've had my eye on. You can find the review here.
Summary: Lego wargame. $10 a model. Interesting game dynamics. And you get to play using this:

Dropship Horizon

I wanted to feature one of the blogs I've added to my list -- Dropship Horizon.  Dropship updates regularly, and focuses on small-scale miniatures releases -- both 6mm and 15mm -- in sci-fi gaming.  Given that I've dabbled in using both scales heavily, Dropship's been a wonderful resource.  Check them out!

Easy Cyberpunk Terrain

As I look toward fleshing out my Shadowrun campaign, I find myself toying with the idea of running using miniatures -- something I've not done in a modern or futuristic setting before.  In my searching, I stumbled across a site I initially found when looking to make Warhammer 40k terrain -- a site dedicated to a game called Combat Zone.  On this site, they show how to make 28mm cyberpunk terrain primarily out of old Plasticville model railroad sets, and the results are stunning.  Pictures, and the link, after the jump.

Mantic Games: Deadzone

Mantic Games is at this point largely known for its proxies of obsolete Games Workshop models, such as zombies or Chaos Dwarves.  Last year, they ran a Kickstarter program that allowed their fantasy game to move past that, teasing beautiful angels, werewolves, ogres, and other sculpts that weren't Games Workshop-related.  They then announced Dreadball, an updated, science-fiction focused dreadball.  In comparison, the releases for their science fiction line, Warzone, were rather lackluster.  I was nonplussed by their space Orkcx and space Dwarves, and their humanoids seemed to try to just be another Imperial Guard world army in 40k.  Now, though, Mantic is teasing a step out of Games Workshop's shadow with their science fiction line.  In a little over one week, they will have a kickstarter for a science fiction skirmish game, Deadzone.

Kickstarter: Beyond the Gates of Antares

Rick Priestly and a few of the other designers of Warhammer, 40,000 are putting together another tabletop science-fiction wargame in the same vein.  He's put it up on Kickstarter.

Warhammer Online?

One of the largest draws of Games Workshop's games is its intellectual property itself.  Within each game, dozens of factions both unique in appearance and play style compete with one another.  Each faction is richly developed, and has at this point more than twenty years of fiction tying it into a cohesive universe in which no faction is strictly "good," but is primarily vying for survival.  Each faction is nuanced to the point where you can see factions within factions, moving in directions that the core faction may not explore.  Both Fantasy and 40k have had video games attempting to capitalize on it, but while Dawn of War was largely successful, Fantasy has not had similar success.

Kickstarter Feature: Kings of War

In what I hope to be a regular feature on this blog, I'd like to feature a Kickstarter I've got high hopes for.  In the past, I've backed a variety of projects, including a Zombie game designed by Cool Mini or Not, a new CRPG Shadowrun game, and an interesting collaborative dice game.  Today, I'm going to talk about Kings of War.

Tiny Battles

I've been toying with making the plunge to a smaller scale (in size, not in battle size) wargame, but I've not been able to settle on one.  The concept of fitting more tanks on the field, and significantly lower prices than the 28mm vendors out there, is an extremely attractive one.  For varying reasons, there are a few that I'm considering.  Epic: Armageddon is attractive, but it's still pricey and is hard to come by, because its parent company likes hiding that it exists.  So here's what I've got on the table:

Hot on the Heels

Just a few days after I posted my editorial about how RPGs and tabletop wargames were in dire need of smartphone-enabled apps, I noticed War Room, an app that was announced in February for the Warmachine and Hordes games.  This is pretty much everything a wargame needs in one app, and is a huge step forward.  For those who just want a quick and dirty YouTube video without having to click thru to Privateer's web site, follow the jump.
