In what I hope to be a regular feature on this blog, I'd like to feature a Kickstarter I've got high hopes for. In the past, I've backed a variety of projects, including a Zombie game designed by Cool Mini or Not, a new CRPG Shadowrun game, and an interesting collaborative dice game. Today, I'm going to talk about Kings of War.
Kings of War is a miniatures game in a similar vein to Warhammer Fantasy. In fact, the rules were designed by Alessio Cavatore, one of Games Workshop's old designers. It had its first miniatures come out in 2009 -- cheap, abundant detailed zombies and skeletons that worked wonderfully as a stand-in to some of Games Workshop's worst models. It had a wonderful run at the beginning, making new versions of armies that GW had either abandoned or let stagnate, and as it expanded to making more and more races, it seemed to slow to a stagger when it tried to become a game in its own right. After publishing the rules, they released lanky and weird-shaped elves and orcs that were trying to hard not to look like Orks. They even made a science-fiction game. Now, they intend to continue to flesh out their game, and make new models -- ones that I'm finally excited about again. Their concept art for their werewolves and ogres appears to be their best yet, and these are precisely the models the Kickstarter is promising.
So why should you fund a game that's already been made? Here's a video explaining.
You've got a week left to make up your mind.
