Replaying X-Com

The next title I'm excited about isn't coming around for another month -- XCOM: ENEMY UNKNOWN. While I wait, I've been fiddling with playing the original (called XCOM: UFO DEFENSE in America). Thanks to a clever post on the Steam forums, I was quickly on my way, with a number of tweaks and improvements that I wish had made it into the original game.

I own the copy on Steam, and that's what these instructions are specifically tailored for.  They:
  • Install updated music
  • Make the game run on Windows 7
  • Apply map fixes
  • Update in-game audio
  • Improve bugs

Originally posted on the Steam forums by Bfox, here's the condensed version:

  1. Download from Steam, as you normally would.
  2. Navigate to your install folder (usually "C:\Program Files\steam\steamapps\common\xcom ufo defense")
  3. Enter the XCOM folder
  4. Copy everything
  5. Navigate back to the install folder
  6. Delete everything except the XCOM folder
  7. Paste everything you had copied
  8. Create a folder named "MP3"
  9. Delete the XCOM folder
  10. Download this zip file and extract it to the install folder
  11. Download this music into the MP3 folder
  12. Open UFOExtender.ini
  13. Under [Music], change "Apply=0" to "Apply=1"
  14. Change "Force_Language=0" to "Force_Language=1"
  15. Change "Doubleclick Movement=0" to "Doubleclick Movement=1"
  16. Change "Skip Intro=0" to "Skip Intro=1"
  17. Save
  18. Run the game from Steam (or run Dosbox.exe)
  19. Play
If it does not work, check the thread for troubleshooting.   I wasn't able to get this working on my XP computer, but my Win7 one runs it like a charm.
